California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada region has always held a special allure, and among its many treasures, Bridgeport stands out as a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts. I’ve long yearned to experience Bridgeport camping firsthand, drawn by its breathtaking landscapes, pristine wilderness, and its reputation for being refreshingly less crowded than other popular spots along the scenic Highway 395. Having driven through Bridgeport, CA countless times on my journeys north to Lake Tahoe, I knew this charming high-desert town and its surrounding backcountry held immense potential for an unforgettable adventure, offering everything from challenging off-road trails to serene dispersed camping locations.
The perfect opportunity finally arose to combine a multi-day camping trip with some exhilarating off-roading on a few challenging trails. What made this expedition even more special was the chance to thoroughly test out the recent upgrades to my 100-series Land Cruiser, a vehicle meticulously prepared for serious overlanding. This adventure was spearheaded by my good friend, Steve Makowski, whose family are long-time locals of the area. Steve’s invaluable insights into some truly amazing “secret” spots promised an authentic and secluded experience far from the typical tourist routes. Accompanied by my son and godson, we embarked on the six-hour drive from Los Angeles to Bridgeport, a journey made smooth and enjoyable without a single delay, fueling our anticipation for the rugged beauty that awaited us in the high desert of the Eastern Sierra.
The Rigs: Our Eastern Sierra Overland Fleet
For any serious overlanding or off-road camping trip into the more remote parts of the Eastern Sierra, having capable vehicles is paramount. Our group assembled an impressive fleet, each rig uniquely equipped to tackle the diverse terrain of Bridgeport and Bodie Hills, ensuring both capability and comfort for our journey into the wilderness. These vehicles weren’t just transport; they were essential parts of the adventure, built for resilience and exploration.
1999 Toyota Land Cruiser (My Overland Build)
My 100-series Land Cruiser has been a labor of love over the past year, undergoing a significant transformation from a comfortable daily driver to a formidable overlanding machine. The most crucial upgrade, and one I was eager to put to the test on this challenging terrain, was the installation of a Stage 2 Ironman Foam Cell Pro suspension system. This robust upgrade provided a full 2 inches of lift all around, dramatically improving ground clearance – a necessity for navigating rocky trails, deep ruts, and unforeseen obstacles common in the Eastern Sierra. The enhanced suspension also vastly improved articulation and handling, especially when the vehicle was loaded down with camping gear, offering a much smoother and more controlled ride over even the roughest terrain.
Complementing the new lift are my 285/75 R16 BFG KO2s, a tire choice renowned for its exceptional all-terrain performance, durability, and puncture resistance – essential characteristics for remote Eastern Sierra trails where reliability is key. To further protect the vehicle and prepare for unexpected obstacles, I also equipped the Land Cruiser with an Ironman Classic Bumper, providing superior approach angles, enhanced front-end protection, and convenient mounting points for recovery gear like winches. White Knuckle Off-Road Sliders were added to safeguard the rocker panels from impacts, while Lightforce Genesis off-road lights illuminated the darkest trails with powerful, far-reaching beams, transforming night driving into a safe and efficient experience. With these comprehensive upgrades, my Land Cruiser was more than ready for anything the Bridgeport backcountry could throw its way, promising a dependable and exciting journey.
2012 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition (Steve’s New Rig)
My friend Steve, an experienced outdoor adventurer with a keen eye for capable vehicles, recently made the exciting transition to a 2012 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition. This Bridgeport trip marked its maiden off-road voyage, making the pristine yet challenging trails around the Bodie Hills the perfect proving ground for his new acquisition. Having been a long-time Subaru owner, Steve had always admired the superior power, increased ground clearance, and inherent capability that a true 4WD vehicle like the 4Runner offers for more demanding terrains. The Trail Edition, in particular, comes equipped with several factory features ideal for serious off-roading, including a locking rear differential for maximum traction, Crawl Control for navigating tricky obstacles at low speeds, and a Multi-Terrain Select system to optimize performance across various surfaces – all of which were put to good use on this trip.
The 4Runner Trail Edition checked all the boxes for what Steve was seeking in a capable overlanding platform, providing the perfect balance of ruggedness, reliability, and modern off-road technology. This inaugural trip allowed him to experience its impressive stock performance firsthand, instilling confidence in its abilities. He’s now eagerly planning a range of tasteful modifications to further enhance its capabilities – perhaps adding an aftermarket suspension, more aggressive tires, or a roof rack – and personalize it for future adventures across the Western states. This journey was not just about exploring Bridgeport; it was also about initiating a new, exciting chapter in Steve’s off-roading journey with his fantastic new rig.
2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X (Morgan’s Comfortable Setup)
Rounding out our formidable convoy was our friend Morgan West, who joined us in his 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X. The Frontier Pro-4X is a highly capable mid-size truck, factory-equipped with off-road specific features such as Bilstein shocks for improved dampening, a locking rear differential for challenging terrain, and underbody skid plates for vital component protection, making it exceptionally well-suited for the rugged Eastern Sierra terrain we encountered. Morgan was particularly excited to showcase his recently acquired CVT Mt. Hood rooftop tent. Rooftop tents have become increasingly popular among overlanders for their quick setup, elevated sleeping platform that keeps you away from ground critters and uneven surfaces, and the unparalleled views they offer.
His CVT Mt. Hood tent was securely mounted to the robust Yakima Outland heavy-duty bed racks, a system known for its exceptional strength, stability, and versatility in carrying heavy loads and a variety of accessories. This setup provided Morgan with a comfortable, secure, and elevated sleeping solution, offering impressive panoramic views of our campsite and a streamlined camp experience that allowed for quick deployment and pack-up. Each vehicle brought its unique strengths and specialized gear to our Bridgeport adventure, creating a well-rounded and capable team ready to tackle any challenge the Eastern Sierra presented, from dusty roads to rocky climbs.
The Camp: Secluded Serenity in the Bridgeport Wilderness
After a day of exhilarating travel and strategic recon, we finally arrived at our chosen campsite, a truly perfect spot nestled with a magnificent, expansive view of the majestic Bodie Hills in the distance. The sense of seclusion was immediate and profound; we felt a world away from any hustle and bustle, surrounded only by the quiet majesty of nature. The crisp mountain air, the panoramic vistas that stretched for miles, and the peaceful solitude made it an ideal basecamp for our overlanding expedition, offering a true escape into the wild heart of Bridgeport.
The only significant drawback we encountered was a necessary campfire restriction, mandated due to ongoing wildfires in the wider region. While this meant foregoing the traditional crackling fire – a camp ritual we all enjoy – it was a small but crucial price to pay for safety and preserving the precious natural environment. We did deal with some lingering smoke in the air on our first evening, a stark reminder of the challenges of wildfire season, but thankfully, most of it had cleared by the following morning, leaving us with brilliant blue skies and crystal-clear views, perfect for another day of exploration.
Our sleeping arrangements were varied and incredibly comfortable, catering to individual preferences. I opted for the practicality and security of sleeping inside my Land Cruiser with my son, making for a cozy and compact night’s rest. Morgan, truly enjoying the novelty and efficiency, settled into his CVT Mt. Hood rooftop tent, which offered him elevated views and a quick, comfortable setup above the ground. Steve experienced the supreme comfort of his Luno air mattress, perfectly fitted within his 4Runner, proving that modern vehicle-based sleeping solutions can be incredibly versatile and luxurious, even in the backcountry. Each setup provided a unique and enjoyable perspective on our stunning surroundings under the starry Eastern Sierra sky.
Waking up in the Bridgeport wilderness was an absolute delight. The spectacular views of the Bodie Hills bathed in the soft morning light were truly invigorating, setting a perfect tone for the day ahead. Our camp kitchen became a hive of activity, transforming into what we playfully called a “Camp Chef showdown.” Each of us, eager to put our respective outdoor cooking gear to good use, prepared various types of coffee – from artisanal pour-overs to robust French presses – along with hearty breakfasts designed to fuel our day’s adventures. It was a wonderful way to start the day, sharing stories, laughter, and delicious food amidst the pristine wilderness, surrounded by good company and unparalleled natural beauty.
Beyond our elaborate cooking setups, other essential gear saw extensive use throughout the trip, proving their worth in the backcountry. Our new Yeti Trailhead camp chairs provided unparalleled comfort and support after long days of hiking and driving, quickly becoming a group favorite for relaxation. Yeti duffels proved invaluable for organizing and protecting our clothing and supplies from the ubiquitous dust and potential moisture. Our trusty Yeti Tundra cooler kept food and drinks perfectly chilled, maintaining ice for the entire duration of our journey – a critical factor in the high desert environment where temperatures can fluctuate wildly. My Frontrunner Camp Table served as the central hub for meal prep, gear organization, and evening socializing. All these items performed admirably under rugged backcountry conditions, confirming their reputation for durability and functionality, and I look forward to sharing a more detailed follow-up review on their long-term performance soon.
Off-Roading & Eastern Sierra Exploration
Beyond the tranquility of our camp, one of the primary objectives of our Bridgeport adventure was to immerse ourselves in the rugged beauty of the Eastern Sierra through a combination of invigorating hiking and exhilarating off-roading. Our chosen morning trail led us to an easy but immensely rewarding hike up to Emma Lake. While the hike itself wasn’t excessively long, it presented a significant challenge due to its steep ascent at an elevation of nearly 9,000 feet. The thinner air and continuous climb tested our stamina and lungs, but the breathtaking reward at the summit was well worth every single step, offering stunning views and a sense of true accomplishment.
Emma Lake greeted us with its stunning, cool mountain waters, reflecting the dramatic peaks surrounding it like a perfect mirror. The crystal-clear alpine lake was an irresistible invitation, and some of us eagerly embraced the refreshing chill with a quick, invigorating dip – a perfect way to rejuvenate tired muscles after the demanding ascent. The panoramic views from the lake’s edge were simply spectacular, offering a profound sense of accomplishment and a deep connection to the high-mountain wilderness that makes the Eastern Sierra so unique.
After a quick but satisfying trailside lunch, we eagerly jumped back into our vehicles, ready for the next phase of our exploration: a thrilling drive over to the historically rich and geologically fascinating Bodie Hills. This area offered a perfect blend of scenic beauty and technically engaging trails, making it an ideal proving ground for our rigs. For Steve, this was a particularly exciting moment, as it marked his first official off-road experience with his new 4Runner. It was the perfect spot to engage 4-Low, test its traction control systems, and truly discover the impressive capabilities of his Trail Edition on varied surfaces like loose gravel, rocky sections, and steep inclines.
Before heading out on any serious off-road trail, meticulous planning is crucial for safety and efficiency. I heavily rely on my new subscription to OnX Offroad, an indispensable digital tool for navigating the backcountry. I consult it often before any trip to scout trails, assess their difficulty ratings, and identify potential obstacles or scenic viewpoints. Beyond pre-trip planning, I use OnX Offroad regularly while traveling, especially to pinpoint desirable dispersed campsites away from developed campgrounds and to discover lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path roads that lead to truly unique and secluded destinations within the vast Eastern Sierra.
The utility of OnX Offroad extends beyond purely recreational use. I also frequently check the app at home to research property lines and ownership details, which is incredibly valuable for responsible land use and diligently avoiding trespass, especially when exploring less-marked areas. In fact, as we are currently in the process of building a private campground, the OnX Offroad app has proven to be an awesome and decisive tool, providing critical geospatial information to help determine if our potential investment aligns with legal boundaries and land access, making it a powerful resource for both adventure planning and practical land management decisions. Its comprehensive mapping layers offer unparalleled insights into the landscape.
Our journey through Bodie Hills unveiled some truly fantastic trails, ranging from dusty washes to rocky climbs and winding paths through desert scrub. This was the perfect environment to thoroughly test my newly installed Ironman suspension. The added lift and vastly improved dampening handled the uneven terrain with impressive composure, smoothing out bumps and providing excellent control, even when tackling challenging obstacles. By the end of our exhilarating run, my truck had acquired a few “desert pinstripes” – minor scratches from brush along narrow trails – a well-earned badge of honor for any well-used overlanding vehicle that truly embraces the backcountry experience.
We made a brief, fascinating stop at an abandoned gold mine, its entrance now securely barricaded for safety, a silent testament to the region’s rich and captivating mining history. While access to the mine shaft itself was restricted, the surrounding area was wide open, offering plenty of space to explore the historical remnants and take in the unique atmosphere. I counted myself incredibly lucky not to pick up any nails or sharp debris in my tires, a common concern in such historical industrial sites. We rolled out our awning for a much-needed break, enjoying the shade and the unique ambiance of the historic landscape. The kids, surprisingly, took advantage of the gentle rocking motion of the vehicles during our bumpy off-road segments and managed to nap, sleeping peacefully through a significant portion of the trip despite the rugged roads!
Throughout the demanding terrain, our BFG KO2s performed flawlessly. They effortlessly absorbed the relentless vibrations of washboard roads, maintaining stability and comfort within the cabin. On the rocky climbs and steep inclines, they felt incredibly “sticky,” providing exceptional grip and confidence as we challenged our trucks through various obstacles, never losing traction. The tires proved to be a critical component in our successful navigation of the Bodie Hills, reaffirming their reputation as a top choice for serious off-roaders and overlanders seeking reliability and performance in diverse conditions.
Our Bridgeport camping and overlanding adventure was nothing short of epic, offering a perfect blend of high-altitude hiking, challenging off-road trails, and serene wilderness camping under expansive skies. I’ll definitely be back to explore more of this incredible region, as I feel we barely scratched the surface of what Bridgeport and the surrounding Eastern Sierra have to offer. There are countless hidden gems, trails, and breathtaking vistas awaiting discovery for anyone with a capable vehicle and an adventurous spirit.
