Celebrating a Century of Design: Formica’s Landmark 100th Anniversary at the International Builders’ Show 2013
The International Builders’ Show (IBS) stands as a beacon for innovation and progress within the construction and design industries. In 2013, this premier event made its highly anticipated return to Las Vegas, drawing professionals from every corner of the globe. Amidst a renewed sense of optimism following a period of economic challenge, the show floor buzzed with excitement, showcasing groundbreaking products and fostering a collective spirit of resilience among manufacturers and builders. One company, in particular, captured significant attention, going “all-in” to celebrate a monumental milestone: Formica Corporation, commemorating its 100th anniversary.
Achieving a century of continuous operation in any industry is a testament to unwavering quality, relentless innovation, and an intrinsic understanding of evolving consumer needs. Formica, a name synonymous with surfacing materials, embodies this legacy. For 100 years, the company has not only created an outstanding product but has consistently iterated and refined it, adapting to the dynamic shifts in design trends and technological advancements that redefine the modern home and kitchen.
Behind the Booth: An Exclusive Look at Formica’s IBS Dedication

The International Builders’ Show is more than just an exhibition; it’s a meticulously planned convergence of industry leaders, innovators, and decision-makers. During the 2013 IBS, we had the unique opportunity to go Behind the Booth with Formica. This exclusive insight revealed the immense time, dedication, and strategic effort required for a global brand to effectively commit to sharing its latest and greatest innovations with an international audience of builders and designers.
To truly understand the scope of their presence and their centennial celebration, we engaged Formica Corporation in a detailed conversation, exploring their long-standing participation in IBS and how they planned to mark their remarkable 100th birthday.
A Storied History at the International Builders’ Show
C&H: Welcome back to the International Builders’ Show. Formica has a rich history here, correct?
Formica: Howdy! Indeed, Formica Corporation boasts an extensive and proud history at the International Builders’ Show. For decades, this esteemed event has served as a pivotal platform for us to unveil our latest product innovations and connect directly with the professionals who bring our materials to life in homes and commercial spaces worldwide. Our consistent presence underscores our commitment to the industry and our belief in the power of direct engagement with our audience.
Celebrating a Centennial: A Booth Transformed into a Tribute
C&H: Congratulations on your 100th anniversary! What special plans did Formica have at the show to celebrate this extraordinary accomplishment?
Formica: Our entire booth at IBS 2013 was conceived as a grand tribute to our 100-year milestone. It was designed to be an immersive experience, celebrating our rich heritage by offering nostalgic glimpses of advertising campaigns dating back to the iconic 1950s and 60s. Simultaneously, it served as a dynamic showcase for today’s cutting-edge laminate innovations, demonstrating how far we’ve come while honoring our foundational principles. We are immensely proud of our history, not just for inventing laminate, but for continually reinventing this surfacing material. Our dedication ensures that laminate remains a relevant, versatile, and indeed, one of the most prevalent countertop and surfacing options available on the market today.
Beyond the visual journey, we also planned to inject a lively celebratory spirit into the show. We hosted spontaneous “flash” birthday parties multiple times each day for attendees. These impromptu celebrations promised a fun, engaging, and undeniably tasty experience for anyone fortunate enough to be in the vicinity of our booth, adding a memorable element to their IBS visit.
The Iconic F-Chip: Inspiration for a Landmark Booth Design
C&H: Where did Formica draw inspiration for its booth and display this year? How did the vision for the booth reflect the current product line or overall brand identity?
Formica: Over the many decades, our sample chip and chain – affectionately known as the “F-chip” – has evolved from a simple tool into an iconic symbol of the Formica brand itself. When planning our 100th-anniversary celebration at IBS 2013, our design team felt it was imperative to celebrate the F-chip in a truly monumental way. Larger-than-life F-chips provided the perfect, bold vehicle for conveying our profound feelings about the Formica brand’s journey over the past 100 years. This trade stand not only honored our anniversary but also powerfully kicked off another century of design leadership, articulated through the exceptional products we offer and the innovative ways we share them with the world.
In addition to its celebratory aspects, the booth was meticulously designed to showcase our broad and diverse product line specifically tailored for the residential market. Our ultimate goal was to spark imagination among conference attendees, allowing them to envision the vast possibilities and transformative potential of Formica products in kitchens, baths, and indeed, far beyond traditional applications.

Crafting a Vision: The Process Behind Formica’s Show-Stopping Display
C&H: Formica’s previous booths have featured innovative custom displays, often resembling furniture, designed to showcase different available surfaces. Could you share the intricate process behind the design and construction of your booth for this landmark year?
Formica: Once our visionary designers at Kuhlmann Leavitt, Inc. cemented the F-chip and chain as the central source of inspiration for our 100th-anniversary booth, the idea to construct monumental-sized chips and a cascading chain quickly followed. Icons, by their very nature, dare to be grand and impactful! The dramatic, show-stopping scale of these oversized F-chips proved to be an ideal and compelling way to display the breadth and beauty of the Formica brands. Presenting them both vertically and horizontally offered attendees diverse perspectives and unique ways of interacting with and perceiving the product’s aesthetic and textural qualities.
Further enhancing the celebratory atmosphere was an equally monumental red sphere, from which a continuous cascade of confetti erupted, both celebratory and incredibly attention-grabbing. This dynamic element ingeniously directed visitors’ gaze to the impressive F-chip chain majestically cascading from above. Acknowledging the practical necessities of a trade show, we knew we required ample storage and functional counter space. Consequently, custom cabinets were ingeniously created to support two- and three-chip arrangements, seamlessly integrating as functional counters. These cleverly designed displays also served as dedicated areas for demonstrating various fabrication techniques and highlighting our innovative eSeries and Compact product lines, making the booth not just a visual spectacle but a truly interactive and informative experience.
Preparing for a Global Audience: Formica’s Approach to IBS Engagement
C&H: The International Builders’ Show is renowned as the largest and most influential construction trade show globally, attracting builders, architects, designers, and media from diverse backgrounds worldwide. How does Formica prepare for engaging with such a varied and international audience?
Formica: At Formica Corporation, we hold a deep appreciation for trade shows because we fundamentally believe that “seeing is believing.” While we invest heavily in high-quality product photography and digital representations, there is simply no substitute for the tangible experience of seeing and touching new product innovations in person. Our preparation involves a multitude of logistical complexities, from meticulous booth design and intricate travel arrangements for our global team to extensive planning of demonstrations and presentations.
However, when it comes to the actual engagement with builders, architects, designers, and media from every corner of the world, our philosophy is beautifully simple: we let our products speak for themselves. Formica, with its 100-year legacy, has deeply woven itself into the fabric of daily life. Many show attendees remember Formica laminate from their childhood homes; they recall the evolving laminate options from just a decade ago. This deep-seated familiarity, combined with the dramatic advancements in our current product lines, often leaves visitors genuinely “blown away.” Nearly every booth visitor instinctively reaches out to touch the product, compelled to verify that what they are seeing and feeling is, in fact, laminate. This moment of surprise and rediscovery, that instant connection with our product, is precisely what the International Builders’ Show is all about for us – it’s where memory meets modern innovation.

C&H: Did Formica introduce any new products at the show, aligning with this significant anniversary?
Formica: Absolutely! Formica Corporation was thrilled to execute two significant product launches at IBS 2013, perfectly timed with our centennial celebration: our highly anticipated 2013 Formica laminate 100th Anniversary Collection and an extensive refresh of 33 new Formica® laminates.
The **Anniversary Collection** is a curated selection featuring 12 brand-new patterns, each meticulously designed to reflect the very essence of the Formica brand and its illustrious history. These additions, including stunning new options like the Black Walnut (pictured above), are designed to meet diverse aesthetic demands and keep Formica at the forefront of surface material trends.

Countertop Trends: Insights from Formica’s Industry Experts
C&H: What key trends was Formica observing in the dynamic world of countertops and solid surfacing at the time?
Formica: Our team diligently tracks emerging and evolving trends to ensure our products not only meet but anticipate consumer demand. In 2013, several significant trends were shaping the surfacing landscape:
- Large-Scale Pattern: The appeal of large-scale, exotic granite, stone, and marble looks continued to hold immense mass appeal. Our Formica Corporation’s 180fx collection, with its revolutionary large-scale designs, remained our most popular laminate offering, proving that consumers desired the dramatic beauty of natural stone without the associated cost or maintenance.
- Rise of Wood Looks: The popularity of wood aesthetics, particularly as countertop surfaces, was markedly on the rise. This trend was fueled by an increasing number of eco-conscious homeowners opting to bring the warmth and organic beauty of the natural world indoors. This growing preference for natural textures heavily influenced our decision to introduce 14 new woodgrains to our laminate line, including revived classics such as teak, legno, walnut, and ash, alongside exciting new patterns like the innovative Ribbonwood Collection.
- Rise of Optimistic Hues: As style preferences began to shift more definitively from traditional to contemporary, homeowners demonstrated a growing inclination towards vibrant colors and graphic patterns. These were often strategically employed as a “pop of color” against a backdrop of crisp white or light wood cabinetry or kitchen islands. The Anniversary Collection, alongside the bright gold, juicy pink, and refreshing leaf green colors featured in our new laminate offerings, provided a wide range of surfacing options designed to invigorate and modernize contemporary kitchens.
- Mixing Materials: A pivotal trend observed was the move away from monolithic kitchen designs featuring only one countertop material. Laminates and solid surfacing were increasingly being combined with other surfaces within the same space, creating distinct and functional “zones.” For instance, a durable and stylish laminate might be applied to a busy island, while a luxurious marble could surface an area dedicated to baking, or a classic butcher block might be utilized in a specific prep zone. This strategic mixing of materials also offered a smart solution for optimizing kitchen remodeling budgets, allowing homeowners to “save and splurge” – scaling back on the amount of real granite or stone needed for the entire kitchen by strategically incorporating complementary laminate patterns in certain areas. When executed thoughtfully, this approach proved both aesthetically pleasing and economically savvy.
Engaging with the Community: IBS Events and Digital Connections with Formica
C&H: Were there any special show events Formica hosted during IBS that attendees could experience in person or online?
Formica: Our IBS 2013 show schedule was truly jam-packed with exciting and interactive ways for attendees to engage with Formica Corporation, both directly at our booth and virtually. In addition to our spontaneous birthday parties, we hosted engaging iPad mini giveaways, participated in live radio broadcasts from the show floor, and welcomed celebrity guests to our booth, creating a dynamic and memorable atmosphere.
A highlight of our digital engagement was hosting the popular **#kbtribechat** directly from our booth (C5047). This hour-long industry Twitter chat, which regularly connects kitchen and bath professionals every Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PST), provided a comprehensive overview of the International Builders’ Show as seen through the eyes of its attendees. Show participants were encouraged to visit the @kbtribechat blog for instructions on how to join the conversation. For industry professionals experiencing the show virtually, following the hashtag #kbtribechat on Twitter on January 23rd at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PST allowed them to enjoy the show’s insights and excitement from anywhere, amplified through Twitter and Pinterest.
