Meredith Ends ReadyMade Magazine The DIY World Mourns

Farewell, ReadyMade: A Tribute to a DIY Icon

The publishing landscape has been irrevocably altered by a confluence of economic turbulence and the relentless march of digital transformation. This shift has particularly wreaked havoc on niche publications, with shelter and lifestyle magazines feeling the brunt of declining advertising revenues and evolving reader habits. It has been incredibly disheartening to witness beloved titles, once staples on our coffee tables and sources of endless inspiration, fold their pages for good. We’ve bid sad farewells to esteemed friends like Domino, Blueprint, and Cottage Living, each leaving a unique void in the hearts of their devoted readers. And now, with heavy hearts, we must add another cherished name to this somber list: our beloved ReadyMade magazine.

The Enduring Appeal of ReadyMade: A Hub for Resourceful Creativity

For over a decade, ReadyMade wasn’t just another magazine; it was a cultural phenomenon that resonated deeply with a generation eager to embrace resourcefulness, creativity, and the satisfaction of making things with their own hands. It stood apart from its peers by championing an inspiring DIY spirit that transcended mere instructions. Instead, it cultivated a philosophy of ingenuity, sustainability, and intelligent design, encouraging readers to see potential in the overlooked and beauty in the repurposed. Every issue seemed to explode with nearly limitless creativity, presenting projects that were often whimsical yet always functional, challenging conventional notions of what DIY could be. It fostered a vibrant community of makers long before the advent of widespread online crafting forums, becoming a true beacon for anyone looking to infuse their lives with unique, handmade touches.

A Cherished Partnership: Charles & Hudson’s Journey with ReadyMade

Our journey at Charles & Hudson has been deeply intertwined with ReadyMade, fueled by a shared passion for empowering individuals through home improvement and creative endeavors. We’ve always admired the publication’s unwavering commitment to inspiring its audience, and this mutual respect led to several memorable collaborations and features over the years. We were incredibly fortunate to highlight their pioneering work and the brilliant minds behind it on multiple occasions, allowing our readers a closer look at the magic that made ReadyMade so special.

One of our most insightful features was an engaging conversation with ReadyMade’s visionary founder and former editor-in-chief, Shoshana Berger. Her pioneering spirit and clear vision were instrumental in shaping the magazine’s distinctive identity, transforming it into more than just a collection of craft ideas but a true lifestyle guide for the creatively inclined. We gained invaluable insights into the philosophy that powered ReadyMade and its mission to inspire a generation of makers.

We also had the distinct pleasure of touring editor Andrew Wagner’s truly amazing Tribeca loft. This exclusive peek into his personal space offered a tangible illustration of the ReadyMade ethos in action. His home was a masterclass in blending practicality with sophisticated design, showcasing how repurposed elements and thoughtful DIY projects could culminate in a uniquely personal and stylish urban sanctuary. It was a testament to the idea that creativity isn’t confined to the pages of a magazine but thrives within our living environments.

Perhaps one of our most coveted experiences was a behind-the-scenes look at ReadyMadeheadquarters, meticulously documented by our wonderful intern at the time, Lauren Chorpening. This rare glimpse into the bustling creative hub offered a fascinating insight into the collaborative energy, meticulous planning, and sheer passion that went into producing each issue. From the vibrant workspaces to the stacks of prototypes and materials, it was clear that the very essence of ReadyMade was born from a deep-seated love for making and inspiring.

Our fearless founder, Timothy Dahl, even channeled his extensive DIY expertise and boundless creativity directly into a project for the prestigious RM 100 contest. His entry, a pair of whimsical yet incredibly functional gold sawhorses, perfectly encapsulated the ReadyMade spirit—a blend of unexpected aesthetics with practical utility. We were immensely proud when his innovative design qualified as a finalist, a testament to the magazine’s appreciation for truly original and well-executed DIY concepts.

The Irreplaceable Void: ReadyMade’s Lasting Impact

The announcement of ReadyMade’s closure is met with profound disappointment; to call it merely an understatement would be inaccurate. We harbor countless fond memories associated with the magazine, and stacks of treasured back issues still feature prominently in my own loft, serving as tangible reminders of a creative era. ReadyMade filled a unique and vital niche within the magazine industry, providing far more than just how-to guides. It consistently satisfied our collective creative spirit, offering a distinctive blend of accessible projects, intelligent design features, and an unwavering commitment to originality.

Its pages were a constant source of inspiration, fueling our next projects and encouraging us to approach challenges with an inventive mindset. It taught us to look beyond mass-produced items, to appreciate the stories behind handmade goods, and to find joy in the process of creation. The closure leaves a significant void, not only for those of us who regularly turned to its pages for ideas but for the broader DIY community that it so effectively nurtured and brought together.

A Heartfelt Tribute to the Visionaries Behind the Pages

To the dedicated staff at ReadyMade, both those who shaped its early days and those who steered it through its final chapters, we extend our deepest gratitude. It was an absolute pleasure and an honor to work alongside you. Each of you brought an incredible depth of creativity, talent, and unwavering dedication to the magazine, consistently producing content that was both insightful and beautifully presented. This extraordinary commitment shone through every article, every photograph, and every carefully curated project. That legacy of excellence, passion, and innovation is something that will continue to be admired and appreciated, even without the monthly physical presence of ReadyMade on newsstands. Thank you for every spark of inspiration, every challenging project, and every unforgettable idea you shared with the world.
