The Ultimate DIY Blogger Summit at Craftsman Experience: A Journey of Innovation and Craftsmanship
Last year, our team had the distinct pleasure of immersing ourselves in the festive atmosphere of the Craftsman Experience’s Winter Wonderland, where we even lent a hand in the construction of the renowned Ultimate Sleigh. That initial visit left an indelible impression, showcasing the brand’s dedication to hands-on innovation and community engagement. Naturally, when the invitation arrived for their inaugural DIY Blogger Summit this summer, our excitement was boundless. This wasn’t merely an event; it was a meticulously curated gathering designed to ignite creativity, foster collaborative spirit, and challenge the limits of craftsmanship among a select group of digital content creators. It proved to be an utterly unforgettable experience, punctuated by thrilling challenges and moments of pure, unadulterated excitement.

Empowering Creators: The DIY Sawhorse Challenge
Craftsman, a name synonymous with quality tools and the empowerment of makers, thoughtfully extended invitations to twenty influential bloggers. What truly set this summit apart was the remarkable diversity of the attendees; it wasn’t confined solely to traditional DIY or tool-focused bloggers. This inclusive approach brought a rich tapestry of fresh perspectives and varied creative methodologies to the workshop floor, promising a dynamic exchange of ideas and skills. The primary challenge for the participating bloggers was to construct projects designed by a group of five selected instructors, and I was immensely honored to be chosen as one of them. The initial hurdle, however, was deciding upon a project that would be both engaging for a diverse audience and effectively educational.
After careful deliberation, I settled on guiding the participants through the construction of DIY sawhorses. These indispensable workshop staples have enjoyed sustained popularity, prized not only for their inherent utility but also for their surprising versatility and customizable potential. My objective was twofold: to impart fundamental woodworking techniques that empower individuals to tackle future projects with confidence, and to ensure that every blogger genuinely enjoyed the process of transforming raw materials into functional, essential workshop equipment. The sawhorse project served as an ideal foundation, accessible to various skill levels while offering a tangible, rewarding outcome that aimed to deepen each participant’s passion for hands-on creation and the world of DIY.
The Pre-Summit Showdown: Instructors’ Birdhouse Build-Off
To inject an exhilarating dose of friendly competition into the summit, Craftsman orchestrated a preliminary build-off among the five instructors. Each of us was given a singular task: design and construct a birdhouse, with absolutely no creative constraints imposed. This “anything goes” approach spurred an incredible outpouring of individual style and ingenious design. Once completed, these unique birdhouses were presented to the public, with Craftsman’s expansive Facebook community casting their votes. The top two birdhouses, as determined by popular vote, would then advance to a dramatic live build-off challenge during the main summit event, generating considerable excitement and anticipation.

The competition for the top spots was incredibly close. My own creation, a sleek and minimalist Modern Birdhouse, found itself in a tight race with the truly imaginative Secret Surveillance Birdhouse by my good friend and accomplished DIY blogger, Mike Senese. Our designs couldn’t have been more polar opposite: I leaned into a clean, simple aesthetic, emphasizing elegant lines and practical functionality – a nod to contemporary design. Mike, conversely, pushed the boundaries of what a birdhouse could be, integrating a remote camera and an intricate door mechanism, transforming it into a piece of high-tech garden espionage. Both our unique visions resonated strongly with the voting public, securing us the coveted top two positions and setting the stage for an intense in-person build-off during the summit. The ultimate challenge? A mystery project, to be conceived and completed in a mere two hours, adding another layer of thrilling suspense to the entire event.
It would be a grave omission not to give special mention to the utterly captivating birdhouse entry from Holly Conrad. As a costume designer based in Los Angeles, Holly specializes in the fantastical and often monstrous creations inspired by video games. Her birdhouse was undoubtedly the least conventional and most artistically audacious, featuring a striking depiction of a monster aggressively eating through a birdhouse. This unique piece perfectly encapsulated the boundless spirit of creativity that Craftsman aimed to inspire, demonstrating that DIY artistry transcends traditional boundaries and can truly venture into the realm of imaginative, personal expression.
Collaborative Spirit: Bloggers in Action
Before the climactic build-off, the heart of the summit lay in the collaborative workshops where the invited bloggers truly distinguished themselves. We had the distinct privilege of engaging and working alongside a formidable group of online personalities. This esteemed roster included industry icons such as C.C. Chapman, Tanis Miller, Ethan Hagan, Andrew Snavely, Brett McKay, Shawn Burns, Jim Lin, Miss Lori, Mr Lady, Louise Bishop, and the insightful team from Tools in Action. Their collective enthusiasm, palpable dedication, and willingness to learn were truly infectious. Despite a spectrum of DIY experience levels, every single participant exhibited remarkable skill and precision in tackling their sawhorse builds, completing them not just efficiently but often with plenty of time to spare before the deadline.
The spirit of creativity didn’t wane after construction; it simply shifted gears as bloggers moved on to personalize their sawhorses. The painting session evolved into another vibrant avenue for self-expression, transforming purely functional objects into unique, personalized works of art. One particular team garnered considerable admiration for an exceptionally creative and intricate paint job, elevating their sawhorses into a striking statement piece. Another team showcased incredible ingenuity by immediately putting their newly constructed sawhorses to innovative and unconventional uses right there in the workshop, powerfully demonstrating the immediate practical value and remarkable versatility of the project. The entire atmosphere vibrated with positive energy, shared laughter, the satisfying hum of tools, and a genuine camaraderie, embodying the very essence of community and immersive, hands-on learning.

The Ultimate Showdown: Craftsman Mailbox Build-Off
As the productive day transitioned into evening and the inviting aroma of delectable Chicago deep-dish style pizza began to waft through the air, signaling a well-earned respite for the workshop participants, Mike Senese and I braced ourselves for the highly anticipated final build-off. The mystery challenge was dramatically unveiled: we were given a daunting two hours to conceptualize, design, and construct the ‘ultimate mailbox’ from the ground up. The rules, though seemingly straightforward, were immensely challenging – we were strictly limited to utilizing only the materials readily available within the vast Craftsman Experience studio. This was a true crucible of improvisation and resourcefulness. Fortunately, the studio is a veritable treasure trove; with daily projects filmed and livestreamed from the official Craftsman Facebook page, there’s an abundant supply of scrap materials, various components, and, most crucially, virtually every imaginable Craftsman tool at our complete disposal.
We were provided with a basic mailbox template as our foundational starting point, and as the clock relentlessly began its countdown, the pressure intensified. With the invaluable and expert assistance of Andrew Nutt, a dedicated and highly skilled member of the Craftsman Experience team, I managed to complete my elaborate mailbox precisely as the two-hour mark expired. However, the sheer intensity and rush of the competition meant I didn’t have a single moment to capture any photographs of my creation in its complete, pristine state. While the full, official video documenting this dramatic build-off is still awaiting its release, Craftsman did provide a thrilling teaser trailer that offers an enticing glimpse into the frenetic energy and innovative spirit that characterized this high-stakes competition.
My “Monster Mailbox”: A Ferocious Defense Against Vandals
Given Mike Senese’s sterling reputation as an exceptional fabricator and a true gadget wizard, I fully expected him to conjure something truly extraordinary. True to his form, he delivered an ingenious mailbox meticulously designed to literally shred junk mail – a fascinating and rather theatrical blend of practicality and extreme engineering. My own approach, however, diverged sharply, leaning towards a “lowbrow” yet undeniably effective concept, culminating in what I proudly christened the “Monster Mailbox” – a mailbox expressly built to fiercely fight back. Having witnessed my fair share of neighborhood mailboxes falling victim to reckless baseball bats during my formative years, my creation was engineered to deliver a rather rude and unforgettable awakening to any aspiring vandal.
My initial step involved fortifying the mailbox’s structure by meticulously adding robust armor plating. I scoured the studio’s ample supplies for scrap tin and aluminum, carefully cutting and shaping these metals to envelop the exterior. To bestow upon the tin roof a distinctive, rugged, and battle-hardened aesthetic, I employed the powerful Craftsman auto-hammer, which expertly imparted a unique “hammered” texture. The true deterrents, however, were strategically concealed within. I ingeniously engineered a spring-loaded door on the front of the mailbox; upon being unexpectedly opened, this door was designed to unleash a sharp, whipping strip of metal, calibrated to startle and effectively deter any unsuspecting snooper or would-be mail thief. Further escalating its defensive capabilities, I ingeniously mounted the entire mailbox on a heavy-duty swivel mechanism. Crucially, I integrated several menacing circular saw blades into the swivel’s base, meticulously positioned so that if the mailbox were struck with significant force, it would spin rapidly, allowing the blades to inflict retaliatory damage upon the aggressor’s weapon. As a final, theatrical flourish, I incorporated several MDF throwing stars – cleverly repurposed remnants from Holly Conrad’s project earlier that day – designed to be flung outwards dynamically as the mailbox spun, adding an additional layer of surprise and defensive chaos. This was far more than just a mailbox; it was a formidable fortress, a defiant statement, and a unique synthesis of inventive engineering and mischievous design.

It’s vital to reiterate that this was conceived as a concept project, not a fully functional, real-world prototype intended for practical use. However, the summit’s host, Alex Sherman, with a gleam of playful mischief in his eye, determined that a true, live test was unequivocally in order. He procured a baseball bat, and, perhaps after noticing the bullseye I had playfully adorned on my creation, proceeded to take a mighty swing. This was precisely the scenario my mailbox was designed to counter, and the ensuing spectacle was captured in its entirety on video. As previously mentioned, the intense frenzy of the competition meant I simply couldn’t capture any ‘after’ photos; my formidable ‘Monster Mailbox’ quite literally never made it that far in one piece. This solitary photograph, brilliantly captured by C.C. Chapman, might well be the only surviving visual record of my elaborate mailbox before its dramatic, televised demise. Despite its fleeting existence, I was genuinely both shocked and absolutely thrilled to learn that my creation ultimately won the final challenge. It was a sweet, validating victory, emphatically confirming that foregoing a plate of delicious Chicago deep-dish pizza for the intense build-off was undeniably, gloriously worth every moment!
The captivating teaser trailer from Craftsman provides a fantastic and energetic snapshot of the action. You can even catch a brief glimpse of me cautiously yet instinctively backing away as Alex prepares his powerful swing – a humorous testament to the unpredictable and thrilling nature of my design! When the complete, official video footage is finally released, I will, without a doubt, eagerly share it with everyone. While the ultimate outcome was undeniably entertaining, I must confess to a momentary pang of concern regarding the unpredictable trajectory of those spinning blades. Thankfully, everyone involved remained completely safe, and the entire sequence delivered a genuinely memorable and thrilling piece of entertainment for all attendees and viewers.
A Resounding Success: The Future of DIY Collaboration
In summation, the inaugural Craftsman DIY Blogger Summit was an unqualified and resounding success. It transcended the definition of a mere event; it was an inspiring convergence of unbridled creativity, meticulous craftsmanship, and profound community building. I had the distinct privilege of connecting with an incredible array of immensely talented individuals, forging valuable new friendships, and collaborating on a fascinating diversity of projects. The opportunity to experiment hands-on with an extensive range of cutting-edge Craftsman tools was an immersive experience in itself, vividly showcasing their precision, durability, and raw power. Crucially, throughout all the excitement, the competitive spirit, and the intense creative challenges, safety remained paramount, and everyone emerged entirely unscathed – a powerful testament to the professional, controlled, and well-managed environment of the Craftsman Experience.
The summit powerfully reinforced the enduring value of hands-on creation and highlighted the vibrant, supportive, and ever-growing community within the DIY blogging world. It brilliantly demonstrated how a forward-thinking brand like Craftsman can effectively engage with digital influencers, successfully fostering a genuine and lasting passion for the art of making and building.
